XBOX ONE

Xbox One is an advanced gaming console with advanced accessories. It has a futuristic looking controller with great tactile support. There are many PC games that support Xbox One controller. There is wonder why you would want to play your favorite PC games using the controller instead of keyboard and mouse. In the following text, we will learn how to connect and use Xbox One controller with Windows 10, 8.1 and 7.

Windows 10

Windows 10 offers more connection choices than Windows 8.1 and 7. Here are the three ways you can connect the Xbox One controller to your PC:

  1. USB Cable
  2. Wireless (without Bluetooth)
  3. Bluetooth (also wireless but uses Bluetooth)

Method 1: USB Cable

USB cable is the simplest way to connect your Xbox One controller to Windows 10 PC. The Xbox One controller drivers for wired connections are built into Windows 10. This means you do not need to download and install any additional software program. With USB connection, you will need to be close to your computer while playing the game. You can only go as far as the length of the cable.

Plug the USB cable into the USB port on Windows PC as well as your controller. Allow your computer a few seconds to detect the device and install the required drivers.

You can connect up to 8 Xbox One controllers using this method.

Method 2: Wireless (without Bluetooth)

You can connect Xbox One controller directly to Windows 10 PC or Laptop (as long as they are Wi-Fi) enabled. If your computer does not have built-in Wi-Fi support you will need to buy a Wi-Fi adapter (it is not the same as Xbox Wireless Adapter). All the modern laptops have built-in Wi-Fi adapters.

You do not need Xbox Wireless Gaming Adapter to connect the controller wirelessly. But, if you happen to own an Xbox Wireless Gaming Adapter, you can also use this method to connect your Xbox One controller. But, you will need to set up the Adapter first.

All you need to do is follow these simple steps:

  1. Open Settings on your Windows 10
  2. Go to Devices
  3. Select ‘Add Bluetooth or other device’
  4. Click ‘Everything Else’
  5. Choose ‘Xbox Wireless Controller’ on the ‘Add a Device’ screen
  6. Click on ‘Done’

You will see the message ‘Your device is ready to go!’ You can now go ahead and play the supported video games using the Xbox One controller.

You can connect up to 8 Xbox One controllers with this method.

Method 3: Using Bluetooth

You can use Bluetooth to connect Xbox One controller to Windows PC. However, please note that not all the controllers offer Bluetooth support. Make sure the controller you are using has Bluetooth. You can refer to the user manual or check the controller specifications on the box. The Xbox One controllers with Bluetooth have the plastic on the front in the same color as around the Xbox button. You can connect Xbox controller for PC via Bluetooth.

Note: Most modern laptops have built-in Bluetooth feature. But, not all desktops are Bluetooth compatible. To connect Bluetooth devices, you will need to buy a Bluetooth trans-receiver separately.
