There are several commonly reported issues about FaceTime, and not all on them have straight answers everywhere. So here is a TroubleShooting guide for Facetime for iPhone or iPad.

Facetime keeps waiting for Activation

When you first run your iOS device, the FaceTime app requires to be activated. You need to be connected to a WiFi for quick activation. But if your device hangs despite proper WiFi network being available, or if the process doesn’t proceed further, you can reset FaceTime on your iPhone or iPad to restart the process.

  • Tap on Settings on the Home menu.
  • Go to FaceTime.
  • Turn the app service off.
  • After a few seconds, turn it back on.

FaceTime doesn’t time properly

FaceTime also requires your smartphone’s date and time to function properly. If this is off, the app will refuse to connect you to your friends in real time. Reset the Date and Time accordingly to correct the problem. Here’s how to do it:

  • Go to the home menu using the home button.
  • Enter Settings, and then go to General.
  • Go to Date and Time.
  • Turn of the “Set Automatically” option, so your device loads the date and time as per your time zone.
  • If the option is already enabled and the date and time are wrong, try rebooting your device. If that doesn’t work, set the date and time manually, although you might have to do this every time you change time zones.

FaceTime calls won’t load properly

This is a pretty commonly reported issue. The problem is usually the WiFi or mobile internet pack. Check if your device is receiving proper internet signals. Try watching a couple on minutes of YouTube content. You can reboot your WiFi router, or turn off your mobile internet and turn it on again.

FaceTime not ringing/not notifying about calls

FaceTime uses your Push Notification settings to cater calls and texts. It could be that your Push notifications are disabled. Here’s what to do.

Not receiving calls on Facetime:

You could be unable to receive calls due to two reasons; either you have entered the wrong phone number or you have blocked the person you’re trying to get in touch with. Here’s what you can do.

  • Go to Settings.
  • Go to FaceTime
  • Check the number and Apple ID mentioned.
  • If this is your email, then you’re ok. Otherwise, click “Add Another Email” and enter the Apple ID and phone number you are currently using.

If this is ok, you might have blocked the person you’re trying to contact. This can happen accidentally especially if you leave the screen of and it comes in contact with your fingers or skin.

  • Again, Go to Settings.
  • Enter FaceTime.
  • Open the “Blocked” option.
  • Make sure the person you are trying to get in touch with is not listed there. If they are, delete their entry and they should be able to contact you pretty easily.

FaceTime won’t launch properly

This is most probably due to expired device certificates. Earlier in 2014, FaceTime crashed for similar reasons. Get your app updated of the App Store and FaceTime should be running normally again.

FaceTime Not Working on iOS device

The easiest fix is to take a look at your device’s memory. If your device is crowded with too many apps, take a few off of it. This could even boost the performance on your device’s other apps. If you’re still unsure, you can reboot the device too so there are no unwanted background processes taking up memory space. This should sort out your problem.
