UNDERSTANDING IP ADDRESS

The first thing we need to understand is that there are two types of IP addresses. The first is the one which is assigned to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This is your public IP address. When you visit a website, you are identified by your public IP address. This IP address can be used to determine the kind of internet connection you are using as well as your ISP.

The other type of IP address is called private IP address. Public and private IP addressed do not function individually; they work in conjunction. The private address is the one which is assigned by the router to each device connected to it. So, if you have a laptop, a desktop computer and a smartphone connected to the same Wi-Fi router, each will have a unique IP address. This IP address is assigned to identify each device on the network.

Private IP address by default is dynamic unless you have changed it to be static. This means that every time a particular device establishes a fresh connection to the router, a new IP address is assigned to it. If you turn the device off and then back on, it will have a new IP address.

This was important to understand as there are different ways to find both types of addresses. We have covered it all in this article.

HOW TO FIND YOUR PUBLIC IP ADDRESS

Your public IP address is what the website servers capture. They are always static, unlike the private IP addresses.

Finding your public IP address is easy. But, you need to make sure you are connected to the internet.

Open your browser and access one of the popular search engines, such as Google or Bing (but not Yahoo! as this method does not work with this search engine). In the search field, type in the phrase or keyword ‘IP address’ or ‘my IP address’ or perhaps ‘what is my IP address’.

The search engine will display your public IP address in the search results.

This is all you need to do.

There are also plenty of websites that will display your IP address free of cost. Here is the list of some of the most popular ones:

You could also find your public IP address from the router’s web-based administrative page. The design, structure, and layout of the admin page may vary across the routers. But, usually, it is available in the WAN or Wireless section.

Typically, the web address for the router admin page looks something like 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 etc.

Type the IP address in your browser’s address bar and enter your username and password. If you do not know your login credentials or have forgotten them, you may need to call the ISP or read your router manual.

HOW TO FIND MY PRIVATE IP ADDRESS

Finding the private IP address isn’t as straightforward as finding the public one. This is because you will need to find the address on each device separately. You could have Mac computer, Windows PC, mobile device, gaming console, or one of the many devices connected to your router. We will cover the most popular devices one by one.

On Windows Using Control Panel

You could find the private IP address through the Control Panel by going to the network information section.

Windows XP: Click the Start menu and select Control Panel. Now double click ‘Network and Internet Connections’. Now select ‘Local Area Connection’ and right click on it. Click the ‘Status’ button and then on the next window select the ‘Support’ tab. You will be able to see your IP address here.

Windows Vista: Click the Start Menu and then open Control Panel. Now select Network and Internet >> Network and Sharing Center. When you see the list of the tasks, click on ‘Manage network connections.’ Now select ‘Local Area Connection’ and right click on it. Click the ‘Status’ button and then click ‘Details’. You will see the IP address here.

Windows 7: Click the Start Menu and then open Control Panel. Now select Network and Internet >> Network and Sharing Center

You will see a list of the tasks. You need to click on ‘Change adapter settings.’ Now select ‘Local Area Connection’ and right click on it. Click the ‘Status’ button and then click ‘Details’. You will see the IP address here.

Windows 8 and Windows 10: First of all, we will need to learn how to open the Control Panel. Press Windows Key + F together. This will launch the ‘Find’ or search window. Type in ‘Control Panel’ in the search box and press Enter key to open Control Panel. You can also press Windows key + R to open the ‘Run’ dialog. Type in ‘Control Panel’ and press Enter. Or, you can press Windows + X and then select Control Panel from the list.

Now here is how you can find Your IP address. Click ‘Network & Internet’ on Control Panel. Now go to ‘Network and Sharing Center.’ On the new window select ‘Change adapter settings’ (it appears on the left pane).  Now you need to select ‘Ethernet’ from the list and then right click on it. Click on Status and then go to Details. Your IP address will be displayed right there.

Even your smartphone gets its own private IP address when connected to the network. Here is how you can find the IP address for Android and iPhone. The following are the general steps to find the IP address on mobiles and tablets. They may vary by devices but by and large are quite the same.

Note: Make sure you are connected to the Wi-Fi network for which you wish to find the IP address

Android: Open Settings app and then tap the option ‘About’ (this option is usually at the bottom so you may need to scroll all the way). Now tap ‘Status.’ You will be able to see generic information regarding your device including the IP address
