Last updated May 15th, 2017

Picture and video messages sent and received using most messaging services eat up ample amount of storage space on your smartphone – they save all media files. But, not SnapChat! This relatively new social media craze sends picture and video snaps that remove themselves from the screen (and memory) within a few seconds. In other words, messages are temporary and short-lived. And if someone tries to take a screenshot of your snap, you are instantly notified. Millions of users worldwide are still using this application. But, many smartphone users are still ‘uninitiated.’ If SnapChat popularity has finally rubbed off on you and you wish to get started, you may use a quick guide. That’s what this article is about. GETTING STARTED

The first thing you need to do is download the app on your mobile device and create an account (if you haven’t done that already).  This is easy. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Download SnapChat from the official app store (Google Play Store for Android and App Store for iOS devices). It is free!
  2. Open the app, locate and tap ‘Sign up’
  3. Enter your personal information including email address, birthday, and password
  4. Choose a unique username for your account. If you represent a brand or company, choose the username accordingly. Be careful about what you select as the username as you cannot change it later. You will need to create a new account.
  5. Verify yourself as a human being. SnapChat has a robust verification process to prevent automated bots from creating spam accounts

Now that you have an account, you will want to start sharing snaps with your friends. SnapChat will scan your contacts and list the users who are already using the app, provided they have made their account searchable.

You can send the friend request to the people you would like to be connected on SnapChat. Once they accept your request you can start sharing snaps. If you don’t want your account to be searchable, you can change the Privacy Settings. Learn more about it at https://support.snapchat.com/en-US/a/privacy-settings

Add a profile picture: One of the first things you would like to do is add the profile picture. That’s easy too. Press your Snapcode to go to the selfie screen. Now select the camera and the app will take 5 photos. You can choose the one you wish to keep as your profile picture. Please note that your profile picture will be visible to your contacts as well as those you have sent friend request to.

CREATING AND SENDING SNAPS

As the name of the app suggests, SnapChat is all about sharing snaps. A snap could be a picture or a video that you share with your friends on the app. The snap remains on the receiver’s screen for up to 10 seconds, after which it disappears automatically.

Tap on the SnapChat icon on the home screen of your device. The app will open to a camera screen. Here is how you can send the snaps:

  1. Take a Picture: To send your photo as a snap, tap the circular capture button on the camera screen right on the bottom. The camera will capture the snap ready to be shared
  2. Take a video: If you want to share a video instead, just press and hold the circular capture button until you see the red marker. This means the app has begun recording.
  3. Reject a snap: You may not always like the snap the camera captures. You can press the ‘X’ button on the top left of the app to reject and delete the snap. It won’t get shared with anyone
  4. Take a selfie: If you wish to share a selfie as the snap, you will need to switch to the front camera. That’s easy. Just tap the camera flip icon on the right on the top. You can also double tap on the screen anywhere to flip the cameras.
  5. Send Snap: when you finally have a snap you can send, tap the arrow icon (blue) on the bottom. You can select the contact (or contacts) you wish to share the snap with on the subsequent screen). Once you send the snap, the app will direct you to the next screen where you can see the delivery report.

Make your snap look cool

Want to make your snap more exciting and stylish? SnapChat offers a number of options to overlay your snaps and make them look funkier. The overlay icons are available on the top of the screen. Here is the quick list:

Caption: Write a cool caption or add a message to your snap by clicking on the ‘T’ icon

Stickers: Click on the square shaped icon on the top to add the stickers. You can pick the stickers from the huge SnapChat library or create your own

Doodle: Tap the pencil icon to doodle over the snap. You can write something in your handwriting (if that works for you) or create a drawing

Filters: You can swipe your snap left to add some cool filter effects. Swiping left will also let you add geofilters, speed overlays and more.
